Morocco Travel Journey

23/12/23

Half an hour before boarding a flight to Morocco, I left my phone in the airport restroom. With no phone and no access to money—my card had been locked after a rushed and unfortunate currency exchange—I ended up relying on my friend’s phone and wallet for nearly a week. Disconnected from social media and the internet, I found myself fully immersed in the people and rhythms of Morocco.

From soft, pillowy flatbreads to tangy orange juice and cold desert nights, each day passed in long stretches of six or seven hours on the road. But the anticipation for what lay ahead never once faded. As our car moved toward the Sahara, the spaces between buildings grew wider, the land unfolding. Then, out of nowhere, David Tao’s "Find Myself" began playing through the speakers, and suddenly I was in a road movie. I remember wishing I had a drone to capture the vastness of that moment from above.

Riding a camel, I watched a young boy gently kiss the animal walking beside mine—his expression tender and devout. It was such a quiet, sacred moment, I couldn’t look away. Under the moonlight, we gathered around a fire, dancing hand in hand with locals to the beat of a drum. We talked, sang, laughed—night after night passing in a blur of joy.

Life without a phone wasn’t boring at all. In fact, I became more present, more attentive. I haggled with market vendors, pretended not to understand English when someone demanded money for a photo—immersing myself in experience, not just observation. Lying back on a pillow, jotting these thoughts down, the scenes return to me vividly.

And maybe that’s the true meaning of travel—to be so fully there, you carry it with you long after.
